New concepts appear almost daily, emerging from both the distant parallel universes of paper-bound corporate or academic research and the “just try it and see what sticks” petri dish that is today’s Internet ecosystem. Those universes have brought us the likes of ICQ, Skype, Blogger, Wikipedia and Flickr.
This is a great story about the Lotus Notes release 1.0 from December 1989.
Love at first sight. Notes is ideal for unstructured data that nonetheless can be categorized in a multitude of ways, that can be displayed at different levels of detail, but that can’t be averaged, summarized or consolidated. This approach seemed natural to Sheldon Laube, the now-famous man who bought 10,000 copies of Notes for Price Waterhouse.
The base price for Notes was $62,500, which included software for 200 machines in any combination of servers and user workstations; additional machines cost $295 each. And at this time, direct sale-only was Lotus entry strategy. Good for us and for Lotus, they changed the strategy. As IBM acquired Lotus, the partner channel was one of the key assets. There is no brand in the IBM Software Group with such large number of very loyal partners like the Lotus brand. We have been one of these partners for 10 years now.
Network World Fusion celebrates the 15th Birthday of Lotus Notes on December 7th. Iris Associates, the software development company from whence Notes emerged – on the Lotus dime – was founded five years earlier to the day.
For me it is the 10th birthday getting in touch with this technology. As we started Kluge & Partner in 1994, I had no idea of what Lotus Notes will mean to me. In 1993 we first started with a Notes 2.x Version, and we went productiv with Notes 3 on Novell Netware 3 Server. A funny experience – three guys with no IT background discovering the power of collaborative software tools. Its been a great experience till today – and hopefully for the next years.
But as Ray Ozzie says in this interview:
“I’m passionate about computer-supported cooperative work, writ large. I hope when people are asking about Lotus Notes that that is really what they’re talking about.”
Its not about Lotus Notes, its not about the software, the brandname and the technology. The real thing was transforming our business. For me the way of working together changed completly with Notes, but we had to open our minds and to change our behavior of sharing knowledge within the organization. Unfortunatly many “Notes-Shops” still use it as an e-Mail and Calendaring Tool. They never realized the power behind that technology. So there is still lots of space for improvement.

Ein alter Araber lebt seit mehr als 40 Jahren in Chicago. Er würde gerne in seinem Garten Kartoffeln pflanzen, aber er ist allein und alt und schwach. Sein Sohn studiert im Paris. Er schreibt eine Email an seinen Sohn und erklärt ihm das Problem.
“Lieber Ahmed, ich bin sehr traurig, weil ich in meinem Garten keine Kartoffeln pflanzen kann. Ich bin sicher, wenn du hier wärest, du könntest mir helfen, und könntest für mich den Garten umgraben.
Ich liebe dich. Dein Vater.”Am folgenden Tag erhält der alte Mann eine Email:
“Lieber Vater, bitte berühre nicht den Garten. Dort habe ich *die Sache* versteckt.
Ich liebe dich auch. Ahmed”.Um 4 Uhr morgens kommen die US Army, die Marines, das FBI, die CIA und die RANGERS zu dem Haus des alten Mannes. Sie suchen überall, nehmen den ganzen Garten auseinander, suchen jeden Millimeter ab, aber finden gar nichts. Enttäuscht gehen sie weg.
Am folgenden Tag erhält der alter Mann wieder eine Email vom Sohn:
“Lieber Vater, sicherlich ist jetzt der Garten voll umgegraben und du kannst die Kartoffeln pflanzen. Mehr konnte ich für dich nicht tun.
Ich liebe dich. Ahmed.”

“Firefox kommt” fand in der letzten Woche breite Medien-Aufmerksamkeit. Der Underdog Firefox, beworben mit einer Anzeige in der erzkonservativen FAZ – unerhöhrt.
Oder doch erhöhrt?
Ich nutze schon lange Firefox, aber interessant ist meine Site Statistic zum Thema Browser. Wenn die Statistik denn stimmt, dann nutzten immerhin 22% der Besucher im November den Firefox. Gut, ich selbst treibe die Zahl vielleicht auch hoch, und XCOM hat bereits komplett dem Internet Explorer sowie der Microsofts Office Suite zugunsten von Firefox und OpenOffice abgeschworen, aber auch deutlich mehr als 15% finde ich bei der vorherrschenden Monokultur durchaus beachtenswert.
Ein Ergebnis wundert mich allerdings doch: Warum benutzen eigentlich die Hälfte der 11% MacOS basierten Besucher dieser Site den Internet Explorer?

Bin eher zufällig auf den POP3 Support bei Gmail gestoßen, als ich meine Weiterleitung ändern wollte. Das Feature wurde anscheinend in den letzten zwei Wochen freigeschaltet. Prima Sache, damit geht Gmail jetzt in den Produktivbetrieb bei mir.

dekaf klärt mich – und damit meine Kinder – endlich auf, dass die These vom eisenreichen Spinat auf einem Irrtum beruht.
Als ein Wissenschaftler den Eisengehalt von Spinat berechnete, war er von 100 g getrockneter Ware ausgegangen, die 35 mg Eisen enthielt. Da dieses Gemüse zu 90 Prozent aus Wasser besteht, bezog sich der Wert also auf ein Kilo Spinat. Ein einfacher Rechenfehler führte also zu der Mär vom Eisenlieferant Spinat. Dazu kommt noch die Tatsache, dass pflanzliches Eisen vom Körper schlechter verwertet wird als Eisen aus tierischen Nahrungsmitteln.
Prima, das. Schönen Dank auch, liebe Großmama, dass Du diesen Irrtum mir immer wieder vorgebetet hast. Was erzähl ich nun meinen Kindern?
