Ist irgendwie an mir vorbeigerauscht, dass Skype es doch endlich geschafft hat, Festnetz-Nummern auch in Deutschland zu vergeben. Ob das dem ganzen Themenkomplex „Umstrukturierung der Klugen IT und TK Infrastruktur“ noch eine Wende gibt, weiß ich heute noch nicht.
I was addicted to Palm – and I love my Treo 650. I am using Palm devices since Palm owned this product category in the good old times. And the short switch to Microsofts mobile platform was disapointing for me. So I expected not very much from the Nokia Communicator, remembering the low performance of this device.
Well, I changed my mind. Using the Nokia Communicator 9300 for a week now I have to admit: it is a great device – although it is still very very slow. But it has lots of other strengths.
Like the Treo the Nokia Communicator is a robust phone AND a good PDA. This is something you should not take for granted. The iPaq device was a good PDA, but an ugly phone. The Communicator is robust, size is not too big, the user interface is clear and streamlined compared to the old fashioned Palm OS. In some ways Palm OS is much simpler, for example entering a calendar entry in the Nokia Communicator requires much more editing of different fields. On the other hand you find application and setting of the Communicator where you expect to find it.
Battery life seems to be very good and the display is brilliant. The Blackberry client installs smoothly and syncs Lotus Notes mail and calendar entries immediatly.
Until now I had no reboots. Only the adress book application crashed while trying to open the contact list with 1.700 contacts which I imported by mistake (Note to myself: never ever sync the device via SyncML with openBC after you synced the device with Lotus Notes via cradle and afterwards Lotus Notes with open BC). But: The Palm would have crashed completly, while the Communicator just killed the adress book application and reloaded it on the PDA system – the phone system continued to work without problems because it has a separat CPU.
So it seems I will stay with the Nokia Communicator for a while. The only thing I miss is the camera. Even if the camera is a no go for business phones I use it a lot for taking pictures and posting it here on the blog. But I think I can cope with this 😉
Wenn man wie ich gerade den Nachmittag bei einem Kunden verbringt, vorher nichts gegessen hat, das Geld zu Hause versehentlich zu Hause liegt, und man dann in einer Seitentasche noch exakt einen Euro (1€!) findet, was bekommt man dafür noch zu beißen? Der Besuch beim Bäcker um die Ecke lehrt: Nicht viel. Belegtes Brötchen? „Zweieurofuzzig“. Croissant? „Eineurofuffzig“. Wiener Würstchen? „Eineurofuffzig, ohne kätschopp“. Schoko-Muffin? „Eineurozehn“. Ohne Gnade. Ich sehe offenbar noch nicht hungrig genug aus.
Im Spreeblick-Shop gibt es Bürsten, die man beim Wort genommen hat. Zum Beispiel diese Nagelbürste. Hübsch ist auch die Zahnbürste. Mehr über die wirklich schöne Bürstengeschichte und was dabei herauskommt, wenn man eine an sich angestaubte, aber gemeinnützige Sache mit Kreativität entstaubt, in der Geschichte zur Bürste.
Die Parisbar ist pleite, der Schockwellenreiter lädt uns dafür nun in sein verlängertes Wohnzimmer ein, und der sonst so von mir geschätzte „Häuptling Spitze Feder“ Broder trampelt noch ein wenig auf den sterblichen Überresten herum.
Ja klar, da saßen sie halt im muffigen Qualm, der Walz, der Sander und auch der Wagner von der BILD Zeitung. Klar waren die französischen Kellner keine Franzosen. Klar waren die unfreundlich und muffig. Und das Essen war auch nicht spitzenmäßig. Na und? Die Mousse au Chocolat war klasse. Und in einer Zeit, in der man versucht, neuen Dingen ein wenig Charisma künstlich einzuhauchen, lebte die Paris Bar ohne Geschmacksverstärker. Es war halt einfach die Paris Bar. So what?
Ich werde sie vermissen – und auf ihre Rettung hoffen. Dann werde ich nach all den abtrünnigen Jahren auch mal wieder hingehen und warme Erinnerungen auffrischen. Kurz bei Udo vorbeigeschlendert ist die Paris Bar ja nur wenige Schritte vom Büro entfernt. Und vielleicht sitzen sie dann ja auch da, der Walz, der Sander, der Wagner – und auch der Broder.
Well, ok, its a bloody spot. But it remembers me of the good old MS-DOS based Prince of Persia. I played it for a long time. Does anybody know if the old version is available somewhere – and runs in Win32 environment? Maybe it is now available for Palm OS or Symbian only 🙂
Über den Produktnamen-Wahnsinn bei der IBM habe ich mich schon genug ausgelassen. ILWFWCM ist ja nur einer meiner Favoriten. Aber dass IBM jetzt schon bei Newslettern eine Abkürzungsliste dem eigentlichen Inhalt voranstellen muss, sollte doch nachdenklich stimmen.

This was fast. As soon as I posted a comment on vowe´s openBC posting, I received a message from openBC staff. They invited me for a beta test of the new sync tool they will provide soon. I am really impressed about the way they take care of suggestions and customer responses.
A few months ago I wrote about my openBC experience and compared it with Plaxo. They guys from Plaxo read blogs too, and they posted a reply immediatly. Unlike Plaxo – which does not provide Lotus Notes integration in the basic services as promised – openBC does. And the new sync tool is great. It allows you not only to sync against Lotus Notes and Outlook and automatically update changed data of your contacts. It provides SyncML capabilities with an configuration script sent to your mobile phone – no manual configuration necessary, all contacts up to date. My new Nokia Communicator 9300 synced immediatly – while Treo 650 is not supported. Yet.

Zum Glück nicht. Mit Schienen hab ich es nicht so.
Nun ist die Kandidatin im Amt. Neben meinen vielen Wünschen, die ich so an Frau Merkel ihre neue Regierung hätte und die offenbar größtenteils unerfüllt bleiben, dominiert derzeit einer: Zeigt es den Beamten. Deutschland wird seit Jahrzehnten von dieser besonderen Kaste deutscher Bürger regiert, und während der Großteil der angestellten Bevölkerung beim Thema Weihnachtsgeld nur noch wehmütig an vergangene Tage denkt, beißt sich das gut mit Privilegien ausgestattete Beamtentum daran fest. Das wäre doch mal ein guter Anfang, hier ein Signal zu setzen.
Sieht so aus, als ob mich meine Kontrollmethodenbatterie heute verlassen hat.

Etwas frei wiedergegebenes Zitat aus den Abschlußworten des DNUG Vorstands, nachdem sich gerade die überragende Anzahl der Besucher und Mitglieder der DNUG e.V. dafür ausgesprochen hat, das Konzept aufgrund der schwindenden Besucherzahlen zu überdenken und eine Entscheidung darüber auf Basis einer demnächst durchzuführenden Mitgliederbefragung zu fällen. Diese Befragung kann man sich dann ja wohl sparen.
