Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint @ Berlin

Das passiert einem nur an Orten wie Berlin. Ein Freund ruft an und erzählt vom Konzert eines Helden vergangener Tage: Elvis Costello. Verve, das legendäre Jazzlabel, lädt ein zur Record Release Party.

Und es wurde ein unvergesslicher Abend in einer unglaublich schönen Lokation, dem Meistersaal. Elvis Costello und Allen Toussaint sollten 30 Minuten spielen, es wurde eine Stunde. Die beiden hatten sichtlich Spaß. Rund 100 Gäste, unter ihnen auch Till Brönner, genossen die „handmade music“ der beiden Legenden, die gemeinsam das Album „The River in Reverse“ vorstellten.

Ein Abend, von dem man lange zehren kann.

Yesterday I wrote about an ethusiastic audience in the keynotes at DNUG. I have to correct myself. Enthusiasm is what happens actually in front of the Congress Center.

Since today in the early morning a fast growing crowd of pubescent girls concentrates in front of the Congress Center. No, they are not waiting for some IBM Executives showing up – they are waiting for US5. Every five minutes we hear an unbelievable yelling from across the place. THIS is enthusiasm. A presentation of new code will never top this 😉

IBM announces iTunes Client for Lotus Domino

This is breaking news from the IBM Lotus Technical Forum in Karlsruhe: an iTunes client for Lotus Domino. Well, ok, IBM only announced an RSS feed template for Lotus Domino. But adding MP3 files to Notes documents and exposing the view as an RSS feed gives you – yes! – a podcast right from your Notes database. Lots of applause for this new feature from the crowd in the congress center.

Everybody seems to be in a good mood over here. Excellent presentations from Craig Hayman, Ron Sebastian, Kevin Cavanaugh and Ed Brill – lots of applause. Compared to the typical german audience I would call this „a fever of excitement“ – even there was not really an unexpected announcment.

So what did IBM announce today besides the iTunes client:
– Lotus Notes 7.0.2 will run on Mac OS – this was allready announced at Lotusphere. And it will be shipped with integrated Sametime presence awareness.
– Full Linux Support for Lotus Notes was announced at Lotusphere as well. It will run as a plugin in the Workplace Managed Client and will be shipped in June. According to IBM over 8.000 people at IBM use Lotus Notes now on Linux.
– As announced last week, IBM showed the SAP Templates for Lotus Notes. Five of seven templates will be ready to ship immediatly. Interesting demo scenario: Take the functionality of the new templates, run the database on a Domino 7 server, expose the code as a web service, let the code consume by the Blackberry Enterprise Server, and push your app out to the Blackberry Handhelds – and there you have mobile SAP client build in a few minutes.
– Sametime 7.5 is on the track and will be shipped in this summer. First thin I learned: they use the same codec for telephony integration that Skype uses. So theoretical integration should be easy – theoretical. Second: The Sametime 7.5 client understands now a kind of formular language! Yes, it looks like the good old formular language that lately raised from the dead in Workplace Designer. For example users can define own functions to automate an import from a specific range of cells from a spreadsheet into a chat. This was new to me and is not availabe in the Sametime 7.5 beta I use today.
– Lots of new features in WebSphere Portal 6 we will announce in our own Portal 6 Launch

And what about Hannover? One year ago Ambuj Goyal announced Hannover at the first IBM Technical Forum. Six months ago Kevin Cavanaugh showed live code as well as the good old tile wall – and Open Document Format (ODF) support was announced. At this years Lotusphere in January we could test some of the functionality. And now in Karlsruhe Hannover became an Office Suite: Hannover aka Lotus Notes 8 will have build in editors for spreadsheets, word processing and presentations which by default work with ODF format. If people still want to buy MS Office, they can. The editors will support the proprietary format too.

So Hannover is Lotus Notes – and a lot more. It will grow from a plattform for collaborative applications to an open plattform for composite applications. For the first time in 16 years Lotus Notes will do more than just talk to Domino. IBM has the vision to make the Eclipse based Hannover aka Lotus Notes the preferred SOA client.

Of course Lotus Notes will be backwards compatibel. „If Notes applications don´t run in Hannover, it´s a bug“, Mike Rhodin said. Unfortunatly we will have to wait a long time until we can try to prove this. Hannover will be shipped in Q1 2007 first half of 2007, as well as my personal favorite piece of software: the Activity Explorer. Some parts of that great technology are available in the Workplace Managed Client, but the best is yet to come. Browser access, Firefox plugin, Office support, Lotus Notes plugin. I expect Activity Explorer to save my life. I gave up cleaning up my inbox. „Gone are the days when people got excited when they heared that familiar sound ‚You Got Mail!'“, Ed Brill said. He was so right.

I enjoyed this first day very much. I visited very good sessions with excellent speakers – and had a good time with the usual suspects 😉

Wenn Karlsruhe nicht Karlsruhe ist

Frankfurt-Hahn ist bekanntermaßen auch nicht Frankfurt – das weiß jeder, der schon mal mit Ryanair glaubte, von Frankfurt abheben zu müssen. Ich weiß nun: Karlsruhe ist nicht Karlsruhe.

Wenn man nämlich nach Karlsruhe fliegt mit der dba, dann bekommt man keine Nasensalbe mehr, dafür aber eine schöne Tour durch Deutschlands Süden spendiert. Das weiß man erst, wenn man angekommen ist. Nach Karlsruhe kommt man nämlich nur mit dem gemütlichen Vor-Ort-Bus, der durch jede verkehrsberuhigte Zone eines jeden badischen Dorfes bis nach Baden-Baden schleicht, wo man dann leicht genervt auf den nächsten Regionalexpress nach Karlsruhe warten darf. Alternativ hätte man auch ein Taxi nehmen können – bei der Entfernung ein spottbilliges Vergnügen von 80 Euro.

Es gibt in der EU doch tausend Verordnungen gegen Mogelpackungen im Supermarkt. Unternimmt denn keiner etwas gegen Flughafen-Mogelpackungen?

In der letzten Zeit hatte ich meine Reisetätigkeit wohltuend zurückgeschraubt – dafür gehts nun wieder richtig los. Montag bis Mittwoch findet man mich auf dem IBM Lotus Technical Forum, Donnerstag und Freitag in Stuttgart.

Zwei Tage sind ja ok, die übersteht man mit Handgepäck. Fünf Tage sind anstrengend. Und die Hotels kann man irgendwann auch nicht mehr ertragen. Man wird eben nicht jünger.

On May 9th, Microsoft released a patch for MS Exchange 2000/2003 . This update may remove the Send As AND Receive As permissions that you may have granted to the administrator account that operates on behalf of your favourite wireless solution.

This means: Installing this patch running Blackberry Enterprise Server, OneBridge or Pylon Anywhere/Intellisync server will stop push mail in your environment.

Guess which push solution is not affected…

Backberry Connect for Treo 650

Fixed a few issues with the Blackberry Connect on Treo. Solved the calendar problem with dbScan tool – there were problems with repeating calendar entries that crashed the Treo after initial setup. Second, the timezone problem fixed itself. No changes to local timezone, no changes on BES or Domino or its OS, just installed it twice and everything is fine now. Adress book? Still no solution for that.

But BB Connect now does what it is supposed to do. And it works.

Achtung! Die Polizei will heute Dein Bestes!

Zack, heute hat es mich leider zu recht erwischt. Zwei freundliche Beamte in Zivil winken mich raus, beglückwünschen mich zu meinem Pech, genau heute telefonierend am Steuer erwischt worden zu sein und wollen meine Fahrzeugpapiere sehen. 40 Euro und ein Punkt. Wie ärgerlich.

Der Unterschied zum letzten Mal ist der: Die Herren hatten Recht. Bluetooth-Headset leer telefoniert, Treo in die Hand genommen – und das am Tag der „Sicherheit hinterm Steuer“. Aber es gibt auch noch einen zweiten Unterschied: Die Herren Zivilfahnder in ihrem ollen weißen Passat Kombi waren nämlich auch noch ausgesprochen nett. Irgendwie tat es ihnen auch leid. Normalerweise, so erklärt mir der eine Kollege mit leidender Mine, würden sie ganz andere Sachen machen. Vermutlich ordentliche Verbrecher jagen, Fingerabdrücke nehmen, Spuren sichern. Da aber gerade diese tolle Sonderaktion laufen würde, müßten hunderte unbescholtene Beamte in Zivilfahrzeugen durch die Stadt fahren und nach unangeschnallten Vieltelefonierern schauen.

Also, wer heute in Deutschlands Norden unterwegs ist: Anschnallen. Hände am Steuer. Klappe halten. Gute Musik an. Ist eh viel besser.

Die tolle „Sonderaktion“ endet übrigens heute abend.

Blogbuster

Herr Endl bescheinigt mir, mit diesem Artikel einen Blogbuster gelandet zu haben. Klar war das ein Zufallstreffer. Recht hat er. Erstens muß man sich erstmal hinsetzen, und etwas lesenswertes aus dem Leben niederschreiben, zweitens muß es dann auch noch einer wie Johnny aus den Tiefen des Internetzes herausfischen und aufbereiten. Danach versinkt man wieder in Vergessenheit, wenn man nicht nachlegt.

Ist auch ok so. Wer sich richtig Mühe gibt, wird belohnt. In diesem Sinne einen herzlichen Geburtstagsglückwunsch an Volker, der Blogbuster am laufenden Band produziert. Und damit hervorragend informiert und unterhält. Danke.

Blackberry Connect on Treo 650

Blackberry Connect for Treo finally has been released.

What it does: It provides push mail, and it works great. But I had many problems syncing my Lotus Notes calendar. Opening the calendar freezed the Treo completly – tried it with several configurations. Setting up the initial Blackberry connection without syncing the device via cradle finally worked. Calendar entries now come in wireless.

What it does not: It does not sync the adress book. I am using Lotus Notes for managing my contact list, so I would need a separate sync tool – bad idea. My Nokia 9300 syncs with Lotus Notes via the cradle – no additional software needed. Using iAnywhere software on the Treo, contacts even sync wireless.

Second: Because of limitations of the Palm´s calendar app, I am not able to invite people to meetings. iAnywhere fixed that in the separate mail-application, and on the Nokia 9300 its a build in feature. This also makes me unhappy.

Some reported problems switching the internet connection for web browsing. For me it worked well.

I will test the Blackberry Connect for Treo for a short time. What I still like is the speed of the Treo compared to the slow performance of the Nokia device. But the contacts and calendar limitations will probably lead my way back to the Nokia 9300.

Alexander der Große und sein Liebesleben

Es gäbe ja jede Menge zu bebloggen.

Endlich ist Google Maps für Deutschland verfügbar und all die anderen Dienste können mich mal, denn wieder mal ist Google klar, schlicht, aufgeräumt und es funktioniert einfach.

Der lang herbeigesehnte Blackberry Connect Client für meinen Palm Treo 650 ist da, und er funktioniert hervorragend mit e-Mail – der Kalender ist seitdem unbenutzbar. Und daher muß er auch nicht ausführlich besprochen werden bis zum ersten Maintenance Release.

Skype bringt eine neue Beta-Version 2.5, mit der man virtuelle Konferenzen bis zu 100 Usern durchführen kann und außerdem – darauf hat die Welt gewartet – SMS versenden kann.

Aber das schönste Ereignis beim durchforsten des Blog-Logs ist der heutige Google des Tages: „Alexander der Große und sein Liebesleben„. Und das führt hierher. Ich glaube, ich sollte nicht nur mehr schreiben, sondern dabei auch mein Privatleben näher beleuchten.
