Improved Google Contact Sync in Snow Leopard

Last month I complained about contact sync between Google and my Mac address book. Finally I purchased a license of Spanning Sync which works pretty fine for me. Now there is a new feature in the zero feature release of Mac OS X aka Snow Leopard:

In May 2008, we told you how iPhone and iPod touch users could sync their Gmail contacts with Address Book in Mac OS X 10.5. Now with Mac OS X 10.6, syncing Gmail contacts is also available to users who do not have an iPhone or iPod touch. If your Mac is running Snow Leopard, you can turn on contact sync in the Address Book preferences.

The syncing is better, too: in Mac OS X 10.6, only contacts in Gmail’s „My Contacts“ group are synced, rather than all of Gmail’s contact suggestions. And photos are now transferred as well, since sometimes you just need to put a face to a name.

Will order Snow Leopard for my Macs now.

Google Sync for „sture Böcke“

So someone who thinks I am a „sturer Bock“ considers this task an easy job: Keep your Google Contacts in sync with Mac adress book on MacBook and iMac as well with iPhone.

So what do we have:

1. Google Sync for your iPhone. Works good, still does not sync every field in my contact form and maps phone numbers to wrong labels – but it works.

2. Sync Mac OS X adress book with Google. Works even better than the wireless sync.

The task is now to keep MacBook, iMac and iPhone in sync. If you read the details for the Mac OS X sync, you will find an important statement:

To try it, go to the Address Book menu, choose Preferences, and then check Synchronize with Google. It’ll ask for your Google account and password, then automatically update your contacts every time you sync your iPhone.

This means if you enable Google Sync in your adress book preferences, adress book will be synced when you sync your iPhone via iTunes with your machine. First problem: I have two machines, and you have to sync your iPhone now from time to time with MacBook and iMac. Second: If you have enabled the Google Sync wireless sync on your iPhone, you have to set back the iTunes sync in your iTunes client to sync adresses localy. After this you have to reenable Exchange sync on your iPhone.

Well, I might be a „sturer Bock“ or a greenhorn, but I can not see a workaround for this.

Second: If I am right, I hope Apple will fix this and let me sync Mac OS X adress book with Google contacts directly.

Update: Just tried SpanningSync. Worked like a charme.

Mail.App font issue

Since I changed to Mail.App on Mac OSX recipients of my mails complained about my e-mail style. And indeed, looking at my text on an other clients, it looks very unprofessional.

Obviously other mail clients like Lotus Notes or Outlook display my mails in Times New Roman. It does not matter if you would go to your “Preferences” and set “Message Font” to Arial. The message body text on the recipients client remains Times New Roman.

So there is obviously no way in Mail.app to set the default font and size which will be seen by all recipients at the other end. You have to do it for each message separately (or use a stationery). It´s a well known problem, and its widely discussed for years as you can when you search the web.

No, it´s not a problem of the recipients client. No, I can not tell my clients to change to Mac OSX – even if I would like them to change to Mac. This is annoying and I would like to know, if there is any solutions out there thats fixes that problem.

Update: It seems I am not alone:

Wrapi-do

This is what I have been looking for so long: The one and only way of headphone wrapping.

Here’s how it works: Pretend you’re at a Def Leppard concert and make the devil horns with your left hand. (Don’t pretend you don’t know what I mean — middle and ring fingers bent and held down by the thumb, index and pinky extended.) Tuck the buds underneath the middle and ring fingers to secure them and use your devil horns as posts around which to loop the cord. (Some people advocate a figure-eight wrap, but I find a simple loop works fine.) Leave a couple inches of cord at the end. Slide the loop off the devil horns, and wrap the remaining cord around the middle of the loops, creating a little bundle. Thread the plug end through the loop opposite the buds and give it a gentle pull to tighten the bundle. This little package now fits neatly in your pocket, is almost entirely tangle proof, and unravels with ease.

Perfect. I just received a new pair of headphones from Apple a few days ago. So this will gonna help me keeping them for a few more months.

Wechselspiel

And finally…

Lotus Notes on iMac

…even Lotus Notes 8.5 beta runs on my iMac – fast and without any problems. Alexander is a happy camper now.

Apfel-Talk

iPhone won’t charge

iPhone Charging Not Supported

iPhone 3G battery life is poor. I turned off GPS, WIFI, Bluetooth now. Finally my idea was to charge the iPhone in my Audi’s built-in docking station while driving. Does not work. See screenshot above. The iPod connector is not a supported device.

This is more than annoying. Says Volker. Me too.

Flat pack

I know this is not really funny for an Apple enthusiast – and I am about to become one of them 😉

But as long as we are not allowed to use Apple in our business the Lenovo Thinkpad X300 is the best choice for me. Ultraportable and indeed everything on board. Ordered it today.

Apple does not make me happy

Apple does not make me happy. Apple Stores everywhere. In New York I was forced to visit the new store on 5th Avenue. Dark forces made me playing around with MacBooks, iPhones and iPods. As I were ready to give up and wanted to buy an MacBook Air, they could not deliver. Then they told me I will not be able to change the keyboard when I am back in Europe. What a hard life for me.

Then looking at the iPhone I don´t want. I really do not want it. In fact – I do not want an ATT or T-Mobile contracts. So I looked at the iPod touch. „This will not make you happy“ everybody says. 399$ for an iPhone, 399$ for an iPod Touch with 16 GB. „You will miss loudspeaker, you will miss data connection as soon as you are out of range of WLAN access, you will miss the camera,…“. So buy an iPhone? „You will miss your adress book sync, you will miss calendar entries, you will miss Notes mail sync, yadayadayada“. So buy an iPod Touch and stay with my Blackberry? Domino will not support the iPhone – yes, DWA on iPhone, but this does not make me happy. Then iAnywhere told me today they will support iPhone in the near future. So buy an iPhone?

Hey, nobody can imagine how it feels to choose between all this stuff. These are real problems I am facing. All the other problems I have are ridiculous compared to the inhuman torture Apple puts me on.
